If your student is absent or you are looking for ideas of things for your Firstie to do at home, please follow the link above to our digital choice board. 

Academic Update

This time of year is so critical in 1st grade.  Please help us keep the momentum going by asking your Firstie about what they are learning in class! New homework sheets came home on Friday. As always, our focus is on reading.  

We are:

• Adding multiples of 10

• Telling time

• Counting money

• Working on word problems

• Comparing and contrasting characters, settings, plots in our reading

• Using venn diagrams

• Writing about community helpers

• Working on our reading stamina

• Learning about long vowel patterns including the “sometimes y”

• Practicing our character strengths

Take home books

Every student has been given a book at his or her level to bring home and practice reading to you or other family members. Each time a student brings a book back to school I will replace it with a new one.  The goal is to improve confidence and increase fluency.  If you’ve not seen a book, check with your child.  Please be sure to return books as loss negatively affects our classroom library.

Math bags

How are the math bags going? Have you been using your supplies? Is your Firstie enjoying playing the game with you? I’d love to hear from you and see some pictures of families learning math together!

Read In

As we begin to wrap up the end of the second trimester our class will be having a read-in Tuesday, February 16th.  This is a special time designated just for reading.  Here are some items you can send in with your child to make our read-in extra fun! 

• Pillow

• A small blanket

• Books from home

• Juice or water in a sealed bottle

Please be sure to send these items in a good fit bag that is easy for your child to transport to and from school.

Remember to send in a solid colored shirt. It WILL GET PAINTED!

Ideas for practicing words at home:

• Write the words on cards. Spread them out on the table or floor. Read the words to your Firstie and have him or her point to, swat, or pick up the card with the word you say.

• Using the cards from the previous activity have your student spell the words aloud. 

• Have your student read the words to you.

• Have your child write the words in the snow, on a paper bag, or type them on their computer. 

• Give your Firstie a good, old fashioned spelling test.

• Find some old magazines or newspapers and have your child cut out individual letters to use to build the words you’re working on. 

Digital Choice Board

Please refer to the Digital Choice Board if your child will be out of school for a prolonged period of time or if you are looking to extend their learning at home. We do not send home absent work in advance for travel. It is really difficult to replicate the work we do in class so we ask that you refer to the choice board assignments. We also encourage you to use Lexia, Raz, Moby, and iXL for ways to continue learning when gone.

Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year and not having school the day after or the Friday before, we will not be having the traditional holiday party. Our class will make cards for each other at school and we will distribute them Thursday, February 11th.

101st Day of First Grade

We will be celebrating this fun day in style on Wednesday, February 17.  Please send an old t-shirt to school by Tuesday, February 16.
