February Homework

Please check your child’s folder for this month’s homework.  Our primary goal is to get kids reading at home. We’ve sprinkled in some writing and specific reading practice.  Please consider posting these sheets in an accessible area and spending time with your child each evening on their literacy tasks. The checklist references weekly words/sight words, both of which can be found right here each week in the Blog.  On Monday I will be sending home notebooks for student journaling and word practice at home.

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year and not having school the day after or the Friday before, we will not be having the traditional holiday party. Our class will make cards for each other at school and we will distribute them Thursday, February 11th. 

101st Day of First Grade

101st Day of First Grade

We will be celebrating this fun day in style on Wednesday, February 19.  The theme is 101 Dalmatians. We will be decorating shirts with 101 spots in class. Please send in an old t-shirt by Monday, February 17.

Conferences

Conferences are coming up on January 28th and 29th.  If I feel a conference is warranted at this time I will send a note home to you to request a time. If you do not hear from me and would like to conference, please email me your top concerns and we will coordinate a time.

Welcome Back! 

I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday break. It sure went quickly! This upcoming stretch of January-March can seem very long, but is an incredibly important time in the First Grade world. This is where I see the magic happen! The children typically begin to take off in reading and gain new understanding of math concepts. Please set your Firstie up for success with good daily reading habits and a nighttime routine to prepare them for the eventful day to come.

Please have your Firstie charge his or her computer every night and bring it back to school each day.

Academic Update

We will be working on using vocabulary such as: true, false, exchange, value, quantity, difference, measure, and paths. We will be digging deeper into place value. In reading we will continue to study elements of fiction. Students will be writing a personal narrative this week in which they will demonstrate proper usage of capitals, punctuation, spacing, spelling, and transition words. We will begin our study of lights and sounds in Mystery Science.
