Pick Ups

If your child is a pick up after school we will walk them to the fence by the teacher’s parked cars. There is oncoming traffic that travels right by the doors they are coming out so it would not be safe for them to walk or run to you if you're standing in the middle of the blacktop area.. I will direct the class to walk on the path of bear paws.

Supplies

Thank you to everyone who has contributed tissues and other items.  If your Firstie does not have headphones or earbuds please get those in at your earliest convenience.  Kids tend to be a bit picky about these so I find it’s best if families work on finding out what suits each child. If this presents a problem for you please let me know.

Academic Update

This week we will be reviewing a number of topics such as:

  • Short vowel sounds

  • CVC words

  • Number naming

  • Tally marks

  • Shape names

We will also begin our Spinning Sky unit in Science as well as exploring the question, “how is school like a family.” We have already learned class procedures for our first Daily 5 choice which, “Read to Self.”  Students will be working on building their stamina over the coming weeks.

Snack

Reminder: we have two snacks each day.  Please plan accordingly.

NWEA

Students will be completing the NWEA test for Reading and Math this week.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Please stay tuned for news about how/when we will be conducting conferences this October.

Birthdays

This year we are asking that all treats be store bought.  You may send treats with your child or leave them in the office and I will grab them.

Walks

We will be taking class walks several days each week.  We may occasionally leave school grounds to travel around the church or nearby block.  A permission slip will be coming home this week in the Friday folder.  Please return it promptly.

Great First Week!

Starting slow went well in 1st grade! We were able to focus on getting to know the children and begin to develop a sense of where they are academically. This coming week we will continue to enjoy smaller class sizes as we learn and practice our procedures and routines.

A Few Reminders

  • On half days your child will need one snack

  • On full days your child will need two snacks

  • Please send a water bottle each day

  • Children are expected to wear cloth face masks each day

Computers

As far as we know student devices will be available in October.  When I have more information I will pass it on.

Remote Learning Day

Plans for the day have changed a bit in light of the fact that student devices have not arrived.  We will meet as a class via Hangouts from 9:30-9:53.

Throughout this school year, whether we are able to stay together in-person or if we have to switch to remote, all students will be using Google Classroom and Seesaw.  Since these programs may be used at home we need your help!  Please follow the directions included below at your earliest convenience so that we have time to troubleshoot if needed.

**You will need your child’s 5 digit student number.** If you do not have this please let me know!  Your student’s email address is his/her student number followed by @stjoebears.com

(Example: 55555@stjoebears.com)

These email accounts are useful for our various programs, but students will not be using them for emailing purposes.

FAQs

Birthday Treats

If your child has a birthday during this school year, they are welcome to send in a prepackaged birthday treat to share with just our class. We have 17 kids in our class at this time.

Specials

Specials classes will begin September 19th. Here is what the first grade schedule will look like.

Monday - School Social Worker

Tuesday - Gym

Wednesday - Art

Thursday - Music

Friday - Library

Communication

Blog/Folder/Email

Mr. Hubble will send a weekly blog post each Sunday with a link to my blog.  Please be sure to check this. I will include news of upcoming events and details about what we're learning in the classroom. The blog will be your primary news-getting source.  Each Friday your child will bring home a folder containing any work samples, notes, or additional communication from the school. (This will begin on Friday, Sept. 25th). Please return this folder each Monday thereafter. Email is the best way to reach me, but you are also welcome to send a note or call the school.  My email address is lfiesbeck@stjoebears.com

Water and Snacks

Please send two healthy snacks for your child each day as well as a water bottle. Please do not send candy or soda.  I do have treats on occasion for the children. If your child has an allergy or sensitivity please be sure to communicate that to the office and to me directly.

Lunch

Lunch will be eaten in the classroom. Please pack food that is easy for your child to open independently. Please do not send in juice or pop. Our classroom has carpet and spills will be challenging to clean.

School Supplies

Earbuds or Headphones
Water Bottle
Tennis Shoes
Face Masks

I will provide pencil boxes.

Classroom Donations

Hand Sanitizer
Disinfectant Wipes
Black Dry Erase Markers

I have also created an Amazon wish list that I will update periodically. I'd be grateful for any donations. Amazon Wishlist

Volunteers

At this time, unfortunately no volunteers are permitted in classrooms.  I am in need of a parent to make copies on a regular, weekly basis.  You will not be able to leave the office. Please let me know if your schedule allows you to help in this capacity.

Mystery Readers

Please consider being a mystery reader for the class! The kids love this!  To do so, you'll need to record yourself reading a children's book and email it to me along with three clues about yourself.  I will read the clues to the children and they try to figure out whose parent, sibling, grandparent, etc. we'll see reading.

Masks

Yes, we will be wearing masks all day.  There will be opportunities for brief, safe breaks. I have every confidence the children will adapt to this quickly. The school will be providing two masks. It might be wise to keep a spare mask in your student's backpack.   You are welcome to send additional masks if you choose. I will encourage kids to take home their mask everyday so they can be cleaned.

Sickness

The district has strict protocols in place that I will be enforcing in the classroom.  Please monitor your child and be diligent about keeping him/her home when warranted by symptoms.

Recess

We will have recess twice each day as long as it's not raining, storming, or below 10 degrees. We will also take walks, and head outside to read as much as possible. I will be sending home a permission slip for your child to take walks that may leave school grounds.
