SHHH... it’s a surprise! 

Hi Parents.  We want to make the last few weeks in First Grade really special for your students’.  Starting on Friday, we will pop a balloon each day.  Each balloon will have a fun activity for the students to do on the next day of school.  Some of them include dressing up a certain way, a special treat, or a fun outdoor activity.  I will post the days for you all to see so you can plan ahead but please do NOT share with your student.  Thank you for all your support this year and we are excited to finish out the year strong in first grade! 

Water

Please be sure your child has a water bottle to have throughout the day. Due to Covid, our drinking fountains are only filling stations-the drinking feature is disabled. I have been through about 12 zillion Dixie cups and it would really really help if everybody had a water bottle! Please note, children will need to dump their water before placing into backpacks in order to prevent computer damage.

Math Bags

Please return the math bags that were sent home earlier this year. I'd like to have those by May 28, please.

NWEA testing 

We began testing last week and will wrap up by the end of this week. We’ve been breaking up the test into smaller chunks where possible.

Animal Project

First Graders will be VERY busy in the coming weeks.  Students are researching an animal and creating a variety of projects to show their understanding of its physical characteristics, habitat, food sources, and predators. Most of the work can be done in school.  However, if your child wants to create a diorama or model of his or her animal they should plan to do this at home.  Please help us out by asking often how your Firsies work is going.

Students can bring a show and tell with them on Monday. Please be sure they choose something that fits in their backpack.

Weekly Words and Sight Words

We will resume posting weekly and sight words next week. We are currently studying the hard and soft c/g sounds and -ed/-ing endings. Bossy R will also be introduced this week. After break our focus will be r-controlled (Bossy!) vowels.

Spring Fever

Our Firsties are restless!  They are very much ready for the upcoming break.  Unfortunately this means they’re very wound-up throughout the day.  Behavior problems are cropping up frequently. Please help us out this week by trying to maintain a regular routine at home, ensuring enough sleep, and reminding your child that good behavior helps them learn.
